Screen Rant interviewed with director Joe Russo during last week’s San Diego Comic-Con about balancing around importanct character for the Avengers:Infinity war

Screen Rant: We’ve heard rumors that there are 60+ MCU characters in the film. Who does the story really center around in Infinity War?

Joe Russo:
You know, the story really centers who you would expect it to center around, so our more important characters. This is a culmination film ten years in the making and we are pulling the main story threads from all of the different franchises into one unifying narrative. So any of the important characters are going to be in this film and they are going to have something important to do in the movie.

Speaking to ComicBook.com at Comic-Con International: San Diego, Russo says he wants to put Thanos on the same level as Darth Vader, the instantly recognizable villain of the Star Wars universe.

“The stakes are incredibly high,” Russo says of the situation in Avengers: Infinity War. “I wanted to turn Thanos into Darth Vader for a new generation. He’s an incredibly intense character. Sociopathic. He takes no prisoners. I think the audience needs to be prepared when they go see these movies.”

During a press event for “Vol. 2,” Marvel Studios head-honcho Kevin Feige confirmed (via CinemaBlend) that there will be four years between “Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2” and “Avengers: Infinity War.” And according to Feige, the reason for the big gap in time is simply due to the fact that Gunn wanted to keep the story still relatively fresh for the Guardians in the second installment.

Yeah, knowing that outside of the Guardians franchise, we don’t necessarily always date the movies. You don’t always know, we don’t say, ‘2012, 2013…’ We do in the Guardians because you do the math and 1988, and it’s 26 years later. But we never say, ‘Oh, this takes place in 2018, this takes place in 2017.’ But it was important for the story that James wanted to tell that they’re still relatively fresh in their new group.

In an interesting newstoday, president of MarvelStudios, Kevin Feige, told Collider that the upcoming two Avengers movie, Avengers: Infinity War and the fourth Unititled Avengers no longer being filmed simultaneously.

Asked about the production schedule, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige told Collider, “We’re doing them one right after another. … It became too complicated to cross-board them like that, and we found ourselves — again, something would always pay the price. We wanted to be able to focus and shoot one movie and then focus and shoot another movie.”

This news shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise. Despite initially being billed as “Avengers: Infinity War — Parts I and II,” it soon became apparent they would be two distinct films. Directors Joe and Anthony Russo confirmed nearly a year ago that the movies would be retitled, with the first part becoming “Avengers: Infinity War” and the second yet to be announced.

Feige confirmed that production of the fourth “Avengers” film will officially begin in August.
